Experiential Learning
Learning is most powerful when it is lived.
At AIM, experiential and immersive learning bridges research-based instruction with real-world application — connecting classroom learning to authentic experiences that deepen understanding and build lasting skills. Through Signature Programs, immersive student travel, and collaborative innovation in z-Space, students engage in meaningful, hands-on work that strengthens critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving. By learning through doing, students don’t just understand concepts, they apply them with confidence, purpose, and independence.
Interactive Humanities

Interactive Humanities is a cornerstone of experiential learning at AIM in both Lower School and Middle School.
In Grades 1–5, students are welcomed into a year-long community that brings history, geography, and literature to life. Through hands-on projects, immersive simulations, and dynamic reenactments, students don’t just study the past, they experience it. This approach fosters collaboration, empathy, and a deeper understanding of the people and cultures that have shaped our world.
In Grades 6–8, students engage in close study of ancient civilizations, North American history, and the development of the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries. Through inquiry, primary sources, and diverse perspectives, students build critical thinking skills while examining how history informs the present.

Learning Beyond the Classroom
Experiential Learning also extends outside of River Road as our students travel to different parts of the United States and beyond. From field trips to historic landmarks and buildings around the Philadelphia region to giving back to communities during a spring break service learning trip in Costa Rica!

12th Grade Senior Seminar
Every year at the end of the third quarter, AIM seniors visit a fascinating location. Senior year curriculum in ELA and History courses, topics, texts and assignments are planned around that year’s destination.
Teachers will prepare an advanced, connected curriculum that fully immerses students in the literature, history, culture, geography, and innovations of the selected country. Some of our past destinations include Spain, England, Austria, Belize, Germany, Greece, and Ireland.

8th grade class studying in the outdoors at the Tetons Science School in Jackson, Wyoming
8th Grade: Tetons Science School - Jackson, Wyoming
Eighth grade students travel to the Teton Science School in Jackson, Wyoming to explore, discover and live this aspect of our exemplary curriculum. In cooperation with the staff at the Teton Science School, AIM teachers work to create an individualized program that integrates core classroom concepts with learning experiences in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
Instruction focuses on field-based learning that uses the surrounding environment, studies living and nonliving factors within the ecosystem, and builds connections that can be made once students return home to AIM. Students have the opportunity to snowshoe, cross country ski, and visit local cultural landmarks within the Jackson Hole region and Grand Teton National Park.

7th grade students in Williamsburg, Virginia in March 2025
7th Grade: Historic Williamsburg, Virginia
7th graders have a unique opportunity to step away from the traditional classroom and experience life during the Colonial period in Williamsburg, Virginia. This includes meeting historical figures, Williamsburg residents of the past, and common people (of all races and socio-economic standings) working their way through life in the streets of the historic town.
This experience allows for a hands-on approach that provides students with opportunities to utilize knowledge garnered in their Democracy classes. It also builds new relationships between the student groups, encourage team building as students work their way through a variety of tasks, and provide ample moments for reflection and contemplation.
